Samuel Goldwyn Films Unveils Trailer for Urban Hockey Drama The Rhythm

Samuel Goldwyn Films has dropped the official trailer for The Rhythm, an inspiring new hockey drama set against the backdrop of an all-Black urban neighborhood. Formerly titled Black Ice: The Rhythm, the film marks the feature directorial debut of Gerald McBride, who also penned the screenplay. The trailer teases a story of redemption, resilience, and reinvention, setting the stage for a sports film that breaks away from convention.

 

Starring Arthur Cartwright in the lead role of Robert, the film follows a man just released from a three-year prison sentence who’s given an unusual second chance: to build a hockey team in a neighborhood that barely knows the sport. Faced with a rundown rink and deep community skepticism, Robert turns to a group of roller-skating talents at a local rec center, determined to turn them into ice hockey players. With Olivia (Jaclene Wilk), his no-nonsense supervisor, watching closely, the journey becomes as much about healing and hope as it is about hockey.

 

The cast also features Devante Jamar Adams, Carlos Faison, Jovonn Crittendon, and Shawnta McDougle, bringing together a dynamic ensemble to tell a story that fuses gritty realism with underdog spirit. The film explores not only the technical transition from wheels to blades but also the emotional evolution of young athletes finding purpose and pride on unfamiliar ice. The trailer reveals high-energy training scenes, moments of comic tension, and a few powerful glimpses of the emotional stakes at play.

 

The Rhythm is set for release on May 16, 2025, and aims to carve out a new space within the sports drama genre—one where hockey meets culture, community, and comeback.
