12 peace accords, 10,000 surrenders mark Northeast's transformation: Assam CM

Guwahati, June 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday highlighted the significant transformation witnessed across the Northeast over the last decade, stating that the region's development narrative has steadily shifted from insurgency and instability to peace, infrastructure development, connectivity and economic growth.

Sharing a post on social media platform X, Sarma said Assam has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the region, which has enabled accelerated development and investment.

"Over the years, the Northeast's development narrative has shifted steadily from insurgency and instability towards infrastructure, connectivity and economic growth, and Assam has been the biggest beneficiary of the prevailing peaceful atmosphere," the Chief Minister wrote.

The post was shared as part of the Centre's campaign marking 12 years of development in the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, using the hashtag #12YearsOfRisingNorthEast.

According to figures highlighted in the campaign material shared by Sarma, a total of 12 major peace accords have been signed in the Northeast since 2014, contributing significantly to regional stability and conflict resolution.

The campaign also claimed that more than 10,000 militants have surrendered across the Northeast during the period, reflecting the success of sustained peace initiatives and rehabilitation efforts undertaken by the Centre and state governments.

The data further indicated a 97 per cent decline in civilian deaths linked to insurgency since 2015 and an 82 per cent reduction in insurgency-related incidents since 2014. The campaign material described the transformation as a journey towards "Peace, Progress and Stability in the Northeast", while quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as saying that peace, security and economic transformation of the region have remained among his highest priorities.

Over the last decade, the Centre has consistently emphasised the Northeast as a key driver of India's growth story, with major investments being made in roads, railways, airports, waterways, digital connectivity and border infrastructure.

The Assam government has repeatedly maintained that the improved security environment has helped attract investments, boost tourism and accelerate infrastructure projects across the state, contributing to broader socio-economic development in the region.
