Assam braces for thunderstorms, heavy rain as IMD issues warnings

Guwahati, June 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, across Assam over the next seven days, with several districts likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the district-wise weather forecast and warning issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, adverse weather conditions are expected to persist across western, central, and southern parts of the state between June 10 and June 16.

 

The IMD has warned that districts including Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Hailakandi and Sribhumi could witness thunderstorms accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall on different days during the forecast period.

In western Assam, districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa are likely to experience intense rainfall, particularly between June 11 and June 13. Similar conditions are expected in parts of central Assam, including Tamulpur and Udalguri, where heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated locations.

The weather office has also predicted thunderstorm activity with lightning across most districts of the Brahmaputra Valley, including Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Darrang, Nagaon, Morigaon and Hojai. While some districts may see brief periods without warnings, rainfall activity is expected to remain widespread throughout the week.

In Upper Assam, districts such as Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli and Dibrugarh are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated spells of very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Southern Assam districts, including Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi, are also expected to witness persistent rain and thunderstorm activity. Hailakandi and Sribhumi have been placed under warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on certain days.

The IMD has advised residents, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow official weather updates. The department noted that warnings are valid from 8:30 a.m. of the specified day until 8:30 a.m. of the following day.
