Sabarimala gold row: CPI (M) limits action against Padmakumar to suspension

Pathanamthitta, June 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) The CPI (M) on Monday decided to limit disciplinary action against former Travancore Devaswom Board president A. Padmakumar in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft case to suspension, stopping short of stronger measures demanded by sections within the party.

He was in jail following his arrest and later secured bail.

The decision was announced by former Finance Minister and Central Committee member Thomas Isaac, who led the day‑long meeting that discussed the issue.

Sources indicated that the party faced pressure in deciding on the action against Padmakumar, with his reported warning that he would reveal many things if faced with severe disciplinary proceedings, which became a factor in the discussions.

A former party legislator, Padmakumar, had allegedly told close associates that he had several things to disclose and even hinted at writing an autobiography, raising speculation about possible revelations related to the controversy.

The issue triggered intense debate within the Pathanamthitta District Secretariat, where some leaders argued that strong action was necessary.

Party leaders reportedly maintained that the CPI (M) could not move forward without taking strict disciplinary steps, considering the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the Sabarimala gold issue.

The District Secretariat’s recommendations were subsequently placed before the District Committee for consideration.

However, after discussions, the party opted for suspension rather than harsher measures, signalling a cautious approach in handling the matter.

The Sabarimala gold controversy has become politically sensitive, with allegations and counter‑allegations involving the management of temple assets and administrative decisions.

Padmakumar, who had served as president of the Travancore Devaswom Board, has been under scrutiny in connection with the developments.

The decision is being viewed within party circles as a balancing act, acknowledging the seriousness of the issue while avoiding an escalation that could lead to further disclosures or internal complications.

The CPI (M) leadership is expected to continue monitoring developments as investigations and discussions surrounding the case progress.
