Speaking candidly about the trend of influencers landing major projects based on online popularity, the actor said, “See, I think—rather than me, as an actor, attempting to answer this question—I believe that time will be the ultimate judge; time will reveal how the landscape evolves. Because, as I rightly mentioned earlier, right now it is essentially a numbers game. And those numbers can be fabricated or manipulated from just about anywhere—Instagram, in particular, is notorious for flaunting figures like '1 million' or '5 million' followers. However, I feel that given the kind of results currently being yielded, none of us are oblivious to the reality of the situation. Everyone clearly understands what is actually happening.”
Tandon further stated that while social media influence may currently dominate conversations, the industry will eventually return to rewarding genuine performers. “Undoubtedly, the time will come again when actors receive the roles they truly deserve. Until then, my job is simply to stay put—to survive—until I receive my due. Because there is a specific 'right role,' a specific 'right project,' and a specific director's vision that is required—a director who looks at you and thinks, ‘Look, we’ve all seen this guy; we know his USP is comedy. But I think I see a little bit of the devil in him.’ Much like how I landed the role in Pink. The moment that due arrives—and it will arrive—everything will fall into place.”
The actor also pointed to what he described as disappointing outcomes from projects driven more by numbers than by performance. “It’s just that the current climate is such that the numbers game is dominating the narrative. Yet, I am certain that even the bigger players in the industry are observing the results—specifically, the catastrophic state of affairs and the dismal outcomes currently being produced—and are being compelled to rethink their strategies. It all ties back to the changing times we were discussing earlier; there was a certain era in the past, and now, things are gradually normalizing once again.”
When asked whether favoritism or social media popularity plays a larger role in casting today, Tandon offered a pragmatic view of the industry. “Well, let me tell you: it is purely business. So, whether favoritism exists or not—look, I honestly don't know. But at the end of the day, whatever we do, there are numbers behind it. And when we talk about numbers, those numbers are massive.”
However, rather than focusing on factors beyond his control, the actor emphasized professionalism and consistency. “It is entirely up to me—as an actor—to determine how meticulously I hone my craft, so that the major production houses or streaming platforms I approach can count on me. It really boils down to things as fundamental as: do you show up on set on time, or not? If a show runs for three or four years—or if a film project spans a year or a year and a half—will you be able to show up there every single day? Will you be able to prove yourself, time and again?”
Tandon also reflected on how the post-pandemic entertainment landscape has transformed the audition process. While he praised the convenience of self-test auditions, he acknowledged that the industry has become more competitive than ever. “We are witnessing a massive shift in the post-COVID era. Things have become much stricter now—the market has tightened up significantly; naturally, there isn't as much work available. There was a time when walk-in auditions were a reality. Today, you can record your audition from home. That’s wonderful because you're saving time and energy. But at the same time, because of this shift, a lot of things have become more internalized.”
Despite the challenges, the actor remains optimistic and solution-oriented. “Coming from the family and background I do, we are taught that rather than cribbing or complaining, one should find a solution. So, for me, the solution lies in working on my craft—honing my skills—and figuring out how to navigate those closed doors to create work opportunities for myself. Work might be scarce right now, but simultaneously, I am actively trying to adapt myself to these changing times and figure out exactly where and how I can fit in.”
In an industry increasingly driven by algorithms, engagement metrics, and digital visibility, Raashul Tandon's comments offer a perspective shared by many trained actors navigating a rapidly changing landscape. While he acknowledges the realities of modern entertainment business, his belief remains firmly rooted in talent, perseverance, and the idea that, eventually, the right role finds the right actor.
