The Category 1 hurricane, which has sustained winds of 130 kph, made landfall at around 4 p.m. on Thursday evening near the town of Pico del Monte, reports Efe news.

The storm is bringing heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge to Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacan states.

Max has the potential to dump as much as 250 mm of rain in parts of Guerrero, according to the national weather service, which forecast that the system would weaken to a tropical storm by Friday morning.

Oaxaca was the state hardest hit by the 8.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked southern Mexico on September 7. So far, 98 people have been confirmed dead.

The national emergency management office has advised people living along the coast and marine interests to prepare for the storm.

Max is the 13th storm of the 2017 Pacific hurricane season.
