MP: Contaminated water issue resurfaces in Indore

Indore, June 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) The issue of contaminated drinking water has resurfaced in Indore, with residents of Mahavir Nagar in Ward No. 16 alleging that foul-smelling, dirty water has been supplied to households for several days, leading to illness among residents.

The latest incident comes months after a similar controversy emerged in Bhagirathpura, prompting renewed concerns over the city's water supply infrastructure and monitoring mechanisms.

Residents of Mahavir Nagar claimed that contaminated water has been flowing through taps for nearly a week. Several families have reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach-related ailments, although the exact number of affected persons is yet to be officially confirmed.

Speaking to IANS, resident Saurabh Tiwari alleged that repeated complaints to elected representatives and civic officials failed to produce a timely response. He said he had informed the councillor and even visited her residence, but no concrete solution was provided. “Contaminated water has been supplied in the area for the last eight days,” he said.

Tiwari further claimed that residents had repeatedly raised concerns about the deteriorating water quality. “When we complained, the councillor told me that there are 28 colonies under her jurisdiction and asked whether she could ensure water supply to every locality. I have a recording of that conversation. Had timely action been taken, the situation could have been avoided,” he added.

Following complaints from residents, teams from the Indore Municipal Corporation reached the locality and began inspecting the water distribution network and the area's borewell. Health Department personnel and representatives of a non-governmental organisation also visited the locality to assess the situation.

According to preliminary information, sewage water may have entered the locality's borewell, contaminating the supply and affecting households dependent on it. However, officials said the exact cause would be determined only after laboratory examination of water samples.

A Health Department team has also initiated a door-to-door survey in the locality. Anganwadi workers and health personnel are distributing ORS packets and basic medicines while gathering information regarding health complaints reported by residents.

Ward Councillor Sonali Mukesh Dharkar, who visited the area after receiving complaints, said immediate steps were taken after the matter came to her notice. “I received calls from residents around 7:30 p.m. on Monday regarding a contaminated water supply and a demand for water tankers. Since it was late in the evening, arranging tankers immediately was difficult, but five tankers were sent to the locality on Tuesday morning,” Dharkar told IANS.

She said the regular water supply had been temporarily halted to facilitate inspection and testing. “The Indore Municipal Corporation is continuously monitoring the situation. Water samples have been collected, and testing is underway. Necessary action will be taken once the source of contamination is identified,” she added.
