Opening up about portraying a much younger version of his character, Shahid said, “The college portion makes me feel very embarrassed; I almost want to apologize to my children because I know that when they grow up—at 45—they’ll be like, ‘Why?’ But I must say that, you know, I enjoy doing all types of things as an actor. You know, your primary job isn't to simply be yourself—anyone can do that—but rather to do things that might seem quite far-fetched. You know, there are actors who play characters much older than themselves; here, I had to play someone younger. But I mean, it’s just fun, man!”
The actor also reflected on what initially attracted him to the project and how the film ended up becoming one of the most enjoyable experiences of his recent career. Shahid revealed, “Before I started this film, I actually wondered what I would be able to bring to a project like this, and whether I would simply be repeating myself. But by the end of the film, I actually thought to myself: ‘Why haven't I done something like this in so long?’—because I had such a good time doing it.”
He further credited director Homi Adajania for helping him discover a fresh side to his craft. “However, I don't think it would have been possible if I hadn't had someone like Tinu thinking of me for the role—you know, since I live right across from him. So, that was just good luck. He did think of me—you can't deny him that credit! But, you know, having Homi as a filmmaker—someone who brought something new out of me, and who wasn't interested in my past work... I don't think he’s seen more than half an hour of my films, and that really helps, you know? Yeah, he admitted as much! So that really helps because, I think, for him, it doesn't matter what we've done in the past; he is simply looking for his character.”
Shahid also had special praise for his co-stars, emphasizing that the chemistry and collective effort of the cast played a major role in shaping the film. “And that actually enables us to do something fresh. I also don't think I could have done it without Rashmika and Preeti; I think they make for an amazing cast for this film. Ultimately, it is truly the collective energy of everyone involved that shines through in the film—it’s not about any single individual,” he said.
Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 is a romantic comedy-drama that serves as a spiritual successor to the 2012 hit Cocktail. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, the film explores the complexities of modern relationships, friendship, heartbreak, and love through an entirely new story and set of characters.
With its vibrant energy, fresh cast dynamics, and Shahid Kapoor embracing a role unlike anything he has done in years, Cocktail 2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases of the year. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas worldwide on June 19, 2026.
