New Delhi, May 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, and his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Wednesday paid homage to their great-grandfather, former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, on his death anniversary.
On the occasion, the Gandhi siblings recalled Nehru's efforts towards building a "progressive India" and dedicating his entire life towards it.
Taking to X after offering floral tributes to Nehru at Delhi's Shanti Van, Rahul Gandhi said, "On the death anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji, heartfelt tribute to him. While laying the strong foundation of modern India, he dedicated his entire life to building an inclusive, harmonious, and progressive India."
"His visionary leadership, rooted in independence, democratic principles, constitutional rights, social justice, and a scientific outlook, will forever guide us," the LoP added.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to X and said that Nehru will forever remain alive in the memories of the nation.
"Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji used to say that a country progresses only when its millions of people prosper and are happy. For this, he established large institutions related to education, health, science, technology, industry, and agriculture. India stands firmly on the foundation of these very institutions," Priyanka said.
"The great freedom fighter, the country's first Prime Minister, and the architect of modern India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji, will forever remain alive in the memories of the nation," he added.
Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad on November 14, 1889. He received his early education at home with the help of private tutors. At the age of 15, he travelled to England for higher studies. Nehru returned to India in 1912 and soon became actively involved in politics.
In 1929, Nehru was elected President of the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress. Under his leadership, the Congress officially adopted complete independence as its ultimate goal. He was jailed nine times during the freedom struggle.
Jawaharlal Nehru was sworn in as the first Prime Minister of independent India on August 15, 1947. He served continuously until his death on May 27, 1964, remaining India's longest-serving Prime Minister.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, after suffering a heart attack.
