Kolkata, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Two-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP from Kolkata (Dakshin) and Kolkata Municipal Corporation Chairperson Mala Roy, along with her son Nirban Roy, on Wednesday surrendered before a lower court here in connection with a case in which they were accused of threatening BJP workers with firearms after the West Bengal Assembly poll results.
Both of them applied for bail applications after surrendering. The lower court judge granted bail to both of them against personal bonds of Rs 1,000 each.
In this case, the MP and her son were accused of creating tension in the Tollygunge area in South Kolkata on the evening of May 4, soon after the poll results were announced. It was alleged that the MP and her son, along with their supporters, tried to threaten the BJP workers at gunpoint.
Accordingly, the Kolkata Police later issued a notice to Roy and her son under the Arms Act, 1959. In response, Mala Roy and Nirban Roy, along with their supporters who surrendered in the court on Wednesday, were granted bail immediately.
To recall, in 2021, the BJP made a desperate attempt to capture power in West Bengal in the assembly elections, and even had set a target of 200 seats. But the dream was not fulfilled as the BJP’s tally ended at 77, and the Trinamool Congress returned to power for the third consecutive term with an absolute majority.
After the 2021 election results, there were several events of post-poll violence in the state in which several people, mostly BJP activists, were killed. However, in 2026, the BJP came to power in the state for the first time after winning the state with an absolute majority.
The polling in the two-phase assembly polls this year was exceptionally peaceful, barring stray events of violence. The new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, had already announced jobs for those killed in post-poll violence in 2021.
