Peter Hujar's Day Trailer: Ira Sachs Brings a Singular Conversation to Life with Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall

Janus Films has unveiled the official trailer for Peter Hujar’s Day, a quietly mesmerizing new film from celebrated indie director Ira Sachs, set for release on November 7th, 2025. The film stars Ben Whishaw as the iconic photographer Peter Hujar, and Rebecca Hall as writer Linda Rosenkrantz, in what promises to be a richly introspective cinematic experience.

Adapted from Rosenkrantz’s book of the same name, the film is a fictional recreation of a real 1974 conversation between Hujar and Rosenkrantz, in which the artist recounts a single day in his life. Set entirely within the confines of Linda’s Manhattan apartment, Sachs transforms this one-on-one dialogue into a deeply layered exploration of identity, memory, queerness, and artistic struggle.

Shot with painterly elegance by cinematographer Alex Ashe, the trailer reveals a lush visual language that complements the film’s restrained setting. Every frame feels lived-in, capturing the essence of 1970s downtown New York while focusing on the intimate space between two brilliant minds in conversation.

Ben Whishaw inhabits the role of Hujar with a quiet intensity and vulnerability, while Rebecca Hall brings warmth, wit, and intellectual sharpness to Rosenkrantz. Together, they breathe life into a moment in time — one that is fleeting, yet profound in its emotional weight.

Peter Hujar’s Day is not your typical biopic. As with much of Sachs’ work (Love Is Strange, Passages, Frankie), this is a film about the invisible details — the things unsaid, the interiority of the artist, and the complicated tenderness of human connection. It’s a cinematic homage not only to Hujar’s genius but to the art of listening.
