Mercury drops 9 degrees in Delhi after light showers
New Delhi, March 9 (IANS) Light showers in the national capital dropped the mercury by 9 degrees Celsius on Thursday evening while the the maximum temperature settled at 28.4 degrees, average for the season, the Met Office said.

It has forecast similar weather on Friday due to the Western Disturbances -- storm systems originating from the Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region which cause rain and snowfall in the Indian subcontinent's northwest.

A weather official said that light rainfall, up to 10 mm, is likely to occur at many places in the city on Friday as "a Western Disturbance is affecting the Himalayan region at present and will impact the weather over the plains".

 

He said that the temperature also dropped by 9 degrees due to rain -- recorded at a maximum of 9.6 mm at Palam observatory, 3.8 mm at Lodhi Road, 2.4 mm at Safdarjung and 1.8 mm at the Ridge.

"The maximum temperature in the city by 4 p.m. was 28.4 degrees, it dropped to 19.6 degrees after the rain," the official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

He said that a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain is likely towards the afternoon or evening of Friday with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 26 and 14 degrees Celsius.

It was a cloudy Thursday morning here with the minimum temperature recorded at 14.6 degrees Celsius, average for the season, while the humidity oscillated between a high of 96 and a low of 45 per cent.

Wednesday's maximum temperature settled at 27 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 18.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average.
