Ahmedabad, Sep 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday hit back at the Congress over its allegations of irregularities in the electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), accusing the opposition party of living in a “political illusion” and claiming that it had already accepted defeat in the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections.
The BJP's response came after the Gujarat Congress intensified its protest campaign against the Election Commission, with hundreds of party workers taking to the streets in Ahmedabad demanding an impartial inquiry into the SIR process and action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities.
State BJP chief spokesperson Anil Patel said Congress leaders should “stop dreaming” and alleged that the party had become politically irrelevant.
He claimed that the BJP had enjoyed the support of the people of Gujarat for more than three decades and asserted that its grassroots network would help it secure a massive mandate in the next Assembly elections.
Patel said the Congress had, in a way, already accepted defeat in 2027 and added that, because of the strength of the BJP leadership and its vision, people continued to join the party.
Earlier in the day, Congress workers dressed in black marched from Patang Hotel to Sardar Bagh, where they staged a sit-in protest and later burnt an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and Congress Legislature Party leader Tushar Chaudhary led the demonstration.
The protest was part of the Congress's broader campaign against the Election Commission over alleged voter deletions and concerns about the SIR exercise.
The party had organised demonstrations across Gujarat on Monday, demanding the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of large-scale deletions from the electoral rolls.
Addressing party workers, Chavda alleged that deleting a genuine voter's name from the electoral roll amounted to an attack on an individual's democratic rights.
“Vote theft is a betrayal of the people's right to vote,” he said.
Chavda further alleged that the Election Commission, an autonomous constitutional institution, had become a “puppet of the Modi government” and questioned Kumar's role in the alleged irregularities.
He demanded Kumar's removal and sought legal action if the allegations were proven.
The Gujarat Congress president said Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had been raising concerns over alleged vote theft since 2023 through press conferences, yatras, protests, signature campaigns, memoranda and interventions in Parliament.
According to Chavda, concerns about the SIR exercise took the form of alleged wrongful deletion of genuine voters and the addition of bogus names to electoral rolls.
He maintained that all allegations concerning the electoral process and the Election Commission should be investigated impartially and in accordance with the law.
Congress Legislature Party leader Tushar Chaudhary said the SIR process should not deprive genuine voters of their voting rights, particularly members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, the Bakshipanch community and economically weaker sections in tribal regions.
He demanded transparent answers regarding the exercise and called for strict legal action if any irregularities were established.
