Bengal: Eastern Railway among top zones in scrap disposal

Kolkata, Sep 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Eastern Railway (ER) has emerged as one of the top three zonal railways in scrap disposal, generating Rs 251.92 crore through scrap sales during the first five months of 2026–27.

Officials said this was achieved through focused monitoring of scrap generation, identification, and disposal, to maximise realisation from redundant assets and progressively move towards zero avoidable scrap accumulation across its premises.

This achievement forms part of ER’s sustained drive towards “Mission Zero Scrap Balance”, aimed at systematically identifying and disposing of unserviceable, obsolete, and redundant materials lying in workshops, depots, sheds, yards, and other railway premises.

“Against the proportionate target of Rs 207.17 crore up to August 31, 2026, Eastern Railway has achieved Rs 251.92 crore, exceeding the target by more than 21 per cent. The achievement also represents nearly 45 per cent of ER’s annual internal scrap-sale target of Rs 565 crore within the first five months of the financial year,” an official said.

During the corresponding period of 2025–26, ER had achieved scrap sales of Rs 193 crore up to August 31, 2025. The current achievement of Rs 251.92 crore is 30.5 per cent higher than the corresponding period of last year, reflecting sustained momentum in scrap identification, lot formation, and disposal.

“A major contribution has come from the disposal of obsolete engineering and track materials. Eastern Railway disposed of nearly 11,500 metric tonnes of condemned rails, fetching Rs 28.56 crore. Disposal of around 29,055 metric tonnes of miscellaneous ferrous scrap generated Rs 100.63 crore, while non-ferrous scrap contributed Rs 53.65 crore,” the official added.

Condemned rolling stock also contributed significantly. During the five months, 175 condemned passenger coaches were disposed of for Rs 31.87 crore, while 310 condemned freight wagons fetched Rs 11.82 crore through auction.

Sandeep Shukla, Principal Chief Materials Manager, ER, said coordinated efforts across the railway made the achievement possible, including continuous scrap identification and lot formation, timely condemnation of redundant assets, and transparent disposal through the e-auction system.

The scrap disposal drive was undertaken across ER’s four divisions, Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol, and Malda, as well as major stores depots associated with the workshops at Jamalpur, Liluah, Halisahar, and Kanchrapara. Regular monitoring has helped accelerate the conversion of accumulated scrap into revenue.

Beyond generating substantial revenue for the railways, the initiative has important operational and environmental dimensions. Timely disposal of scrap releases valuable railway land and storage space, improves housekeeping and workplace safety, reduces avoidable accumulation of obsolete materials, and enables recycling of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

“This milestone reflects Eastern Railway’s commitment to efficient asset management, financial prudence, and environmental sustainability. Beyond generating substantial non-fare revenue, our sustained scrap disposal drive frees up valuable railway land and storage space, improves workplace safety and housekeeping, and supports circular economy practices through metal recycling. Eastern Railway will continue its momentum toward achieving ‘Mission Zero Scrap Balance’,” said Shibram Majhi, CPRO, ER.
