Set against the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo follows a disgraced detective whose personal demons collide with a dangerous investigation. Oguri plays a gambling-addicted Tokyo cop who finds himself pulled deeper into a case involving a missing politician’s daughter, while a mysterious killer appears to be watching his every move.
The film brings together an intriguing international cast, with Lily James stepping into the role of an enigmatic FBI agent caught in the middle of the investigation. Liv Morgan also makes an appearance, joining a cast that includes Shotaro Mamiya, Jun Kunimura, Hiroshi Tachi and Nanase Nishino.
According to the film’s official synopsis, the story sees Oguri’s troubled detective spiral further into a world of corruption and violence as he becomes entangled with a vengeful former Yakuza member, the mysterious FBI agent played by James and the disappearance of the daughter of a powerful American family. With loyalties constantly shifting, the investigation appears to be heading into increasingly dangerous territory.
Behind the camera is Takashi Miike, one of Japan’s most prolific and distinctive filmmakers, whose filmography is known for pushing crime, horror and action into wildly unpredictable territory. Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is directed by Miike from a screenplay written by Daisuke Tengan, setting up another potentially explosive collaboration between two filmmakers well versed in the darker side of Japanese cinema.
The newly released trailer further teases a gritty crime saga filled with violence, suspicious characters and a detective seemingly struggling to stay in control. With the criminal underworld closing in and the investigation becoming increasingly personal, the film looks set to deliver the kind of chaotic, uncompromising ride audiences have come to expect from Miike.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is set to premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival as a Special Presentation this September. The film is also expected to receive a wider theatrical release later in 2026, giving fans of Japanese crime cinema and Miike’s work another dark and stylish thriller to look forward to.
