Assam: Bongaigaon Medical College gets nod to admit students

Guwahati, Aug 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formally approved Bongaigaon Medical College, allowing the institution to admit 100 MBBS students.

With the approval, Bongaigaon Medical College has become Assam’s 15th medical college, while the total number of MBBS seats in the state has increased to 1,925, according to the Chief Minister.

Sarma described the development as another significant milestone in Assam’s efforts to expand medical education and strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

He said in a post on X that he was “happy to share that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has formally approved Bongaigaon Medical College with permission to admit 100 MBBS students.”

The Chief Minister added that the new medical college would further contribute to Assam’s growing medical education ecosystem and support the state government’s efforts to develop Assam as a major hub for medical education.

He also thanked Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda for his continued support and for approving the medical college.

“With this, Bongaigaon Medical College becomes Assam’s 15th medical college, taking our total MBBS seats to 1,925,” Sarma said, terming the approval a proud moment for Assam.

He noted that the expansion of medical education would create greater opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medicine within the state.

The development comes amid the state government’s continued focus on expanding medical and healthcare facilities across Assam, including increasing access to medical education and trained healthcare professionals.

The addition of 100 MBBS seats at Bongaigaon Medical College is expected to give students from Assam and the wider Northeast more opportunities to pursue medical education closer to home.

Sarma has frequently highlighted the expansion of medical colleges and MBBS seats as a key component of his government’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen human resources in the medical sector.

With 15 medical colleges and 1,925 MBBS seats, Assam has significantly expanded its medical education capacity in recent years.

The Chief Minister said the latest approval would further strengthen the state’s journey towards becoming a major centre for medical education in the country.
