Bihar: Flood situation worsens in Darbhanga; 20 villages inundated

Patna, July 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) The impact of incessant torrential rainfall in Nepal’s Terai region and the heavy discharge of water from the Kosi Barrage is now being felt across Bihar’s Mithilanchal region.

The Kosi and Kamala Balan rivers are in spate in Darbhanga district, triggering widespread flooding in Kusheshwar Asthan East and Ghanshyampur blocks. With river levels rising steadily, floodwaters have rapidly spread into low‑lying areas, inundating villages, disrupting transportation, and affecting thousands of residents.

Four days after the release of water from the Kosi Barrage, more than 20 villages in Darbhanga have been submerged. The situation is particularly difficult in Kusheshwar Asthan East block, where six villages have been completely cut off from the mainland, effectively turning into islands.

The affected villages include Itahar, Chaukiya, Lakshminiya, Baltharwa, and Basbaria under Itahar Panchayat, as well as Bharain Tola in Sughrain Panchayat. Thousands of residents remain stranded, with 13 boats currently deployed to ferry people and essential supplies.

Residents of Golaima village said floodwaters have completely cut off road connectivity between the affected villages and the block headquarters. The disruption has brought normal life to a standstill, making it extremely difficult for people to reach markets, purchase essentials, access banking services, or transport patients to hospitals.

With roads submerged, boats have become the only means of transportation.

Villagers alleged that the administration has failed to deploy an adequate number of government‑operated boats, forcing people to depend on private operators charging around Rs 40 per person for a round trip.

The worsening flood situation has also affected educational institutions. Floodwaters entered Lakshminiya Primary School, halting teaching activities. At Itahar Pokhar Primary School, water has surrounded the campus, making it unsafe for students and teachers. Block Education Officer Prince Kumar said that if river levels continue to rise, both schools will be closed as a precautionary measure.

In Ghanshyampur block, the Kamala Balan River has been rising continuously over the past week. District Disaster Management Officer Pranav Raj said that although the flood situation is serious, it remains under control, and the administration has completed preparations for relief and rescue operations.

According to the administration, 186 government boats have been arranged for flood‑affected areas, 512 locations identified for relief camps, and 611 community kitchens are ready to provide food to displaced families if required.

District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar said flooding was caused by heavy rainfall and increased inflow of water into the river system.

He added that all embankments are being monitored round the clock, while arrangements for shelter and food for displaced residents have been completed.

“As a precautionary measure, the administration has ordered the evacuation of nearly two dozen vulnerable villages,” he said.

He added that embankments across five divisions are under continuous surveillance, relief camps and community kitchens have been prepared in accordance with the SOP, and permission has been granted for private boats to ensure uninterrupted transportation in low‑lying Kusheshwar Asthan.
