Guwahati/Agartala, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast widespread to very heavy rainfall across several Northeastern states till July 14, with Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura expected to witness intense spells of rain, prompting weather alerts in the region.
In a statement, the IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, is likely over Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday and again during July 10-14.
The weather office also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh during July 10-14, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places during July 8-14.
Meanwhile, fresh spells of heavy rain have triggered flash floods and landslides in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, affecting more than 94,200 people across 26 districts, officials said.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Itanagar, Changlang district witnessed heavy rainfall leading to landslides and flooding, while Upper Subansiri and Upper Siang districts were also severely affected by floods and multiple landslides.
A rockfall incident triggered by incessant rainfall was also reported from East Kameng district.
According to official reports, four people have so far lost their lives in the recent wave of floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh, while 21 others have been injured and two women remain missing.
The State Disaster Management Authority and district administrations are continuing rescue, relief and restoration operations in the affected districts.
In Tripura, the IMD's Meteorological Centre in Agartala has issued an Orange Warning for Wednesday for West Tripura, Khowai, Dhalai and Gomati districts due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
An IMD statement said that a Yellow alert has been issued for the remaining four districts, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Additionally, a Yellow alert has been issued for July 9 for all eight districts of Tripura and for July 10 for West Tripura, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura districts due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Normal life was disrupted in several parts of Tripura following heavy to very heavy rainfall that began on Tuesday evening, with waterlogging reported from low-lying areas and traffic movement affected in several locations.
The Southwest Monsoon had advanced into substantial parts of the Northeastern region on June 7, two days later than its normal onset date. Officials of the IMD's Meteorological Centres in Guwahati and Agartala said that the Southwest Monsoon covered the entire Northeastern region by June 10. Despite the current spell of widespread rainfall, seven of the eight northeastern states, barring Sikkim, recorded a massive rainfall deficiency during June due to weak rain-bearing systems over the Bay of Bengal, the absence of active monsoon troughs and the influence of El Nino conditions, IMD officials said.
According to IMD data, the northeastern region recorded an overall rainfall deficiency of more than 40 per cent during June, the first month of the four-month Southwest Monsoon season extending from June to September. Among the eight states, only Sikkim recorded excess rainfall during June, receiving 515.9 mm against its normal rainfall of 438.2 mm. An IMD official said that the monthly average rainfall over the country as a whole during July 2026 is most likely to remain below normal, at less than 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
