Ahmedabad, July 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Gujarat government on Wednesday appointed senior IPS officer Anupam Singh Gahlaut as the new Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner, transferring him from his present post as Surat City Police Commissioner.
According to a notification issued by the Home Department, Gahlaut, a 1997-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, has been appointed to the vacant cadre post of Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City.
The post has been downgraded from an ex-cadre post in the Director General of Police (DGP) grade to a cadre post in the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) grade.
Gahlaut fills the vacancy created after Gyanendra Singh Malik, a 1993-batch IPS officer, was appointed DGP of Gujarat last month.
Malik succeeded K. L. N. Rao, who had been holding additional charge of the state's top police post.
An engineer by training, Gahlaut holds Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degrees and joined the IPS through the Union Public Service Commission's Civil Services Examination in 1997.
During a policing career spanning nearly three decades, he has served in a variety of operational, intelligence and urban policing assignments across Gujarat.
Earlier in his career, Gahlaut served in district policing before holding key intelligence positions, including Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) and later Additional Director General of Police (CID-Intelligence) at Gandhinagar following his promotion to the ADGP rank in 2022.
He was appointed Vadodara City Police Commissioner in July 2023 and was transferred as Surat City Police Commissioner in April 2024, where he has since overseen policing in one of Gujarat's largest urban centres.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2013.
During his tenure in Surat, Gahlaut oversaw several policing initiatives, including measures to strengthen traffic management, improve public grievance redressal and enhance policing of the city's textile industry.
Under his leadership, Surat Police also announced plans to establish a dedicated police station to investigate textile-related offences.
