Kolkata, July 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) A special CBI court in Kolkata on Wednesday framed charges against 19 accused, including former Trinamool Congress MLA Pares Paul and ex-KMC councillor Swapan Samaddar, in the murder case of BJP worker Avijit Sarkar, who was killed during post-poll violence following the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections.
The 19 accused individuals against whom the process of charge framing has been concluded include former Trinamool Congress legislator from Beliaghata assembly constituency in North Kolkata, Pares Paul, and former party councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Swapan Samaddar.
Both Paul and Samaddar had faced questioning by the CBI sleuths in the matter a number of times.
After the results of the 2021 assembly elections were announced, the BJP worker, Abhijit Sarkar from Kankurgachi area in North Kolkata, was brutally murdered, allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists. Family members alleged that he was brutally tortured and killed.
Based on the family's complaint, the Narkeldanga Police Station started an initial investigation. The police also filed a chargesheet against 15 people.
Later, the CBI took over the investigation following the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The CBI submitted an additional chargesheet and named a total of 20 accused. The erstwhile officer-in-charge and a lady sub-inspector of Kankurgachi Police Station were also arrested.
In their bail case, the court raised the question of how society could function if the protectors were playing the roles of killers. The family members of the deceased BJP worker also expressed anger at the CBI's pace of investigation in the matter.
After the recently concluded West Bengal assembly polls, the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, announced that not a single person involved with any case relating to 2021 post-poll violence will be spared.
Finally, on Wednesday, the process of charge framing in the case at the special CBI court has been completed.
