Calcutta HC rejects anticipatory bail plea of absconding aide to Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata, June 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Sumit Roy, the absconding executive assistant to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee.

At the same time, a single-judge bench also directed Roy to submit details of his financial transactions and bank accounts in the form of an affidavit by June 29.

The bench further directed the state police to submit a detailed report on the case registered against him, along with the case diary, to the court within the same period.

An arrest warrant as well as a lookout notice had already been issued against Roy, who is accused of different charges relating to corruption and illegal land grabbing. Earlier this month, a joint team comprising personnel from Salboni Police Station under the West Midnapore district police, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Kolkata Police conducted an early morning raid and search operation at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in Kalighat in south Kolkata in search of Roy.

Although Roy had remained incommunicado for a long time, his counsel moved an anticipatory bail petition before the same bench earlier this month. The matter came up for hearing on Thursday and, after detailed arguments, the judge rejected the anticipatory bail plea.

During the hearing on Thursday, Roy’s counsel argued that his client was merely an employee in the office of the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, which is in power in West Bengal.

“Why would he be held responsible if any land sale documents were found in that party office?” Roy’s counsel questioned.

In his counter-argument, the state government counsel informed the court that the police investigation had unearthed fake seals and stamps.

“Apart from that, the police have found close connections between Roy and former Trinamool Congress legislator Sujoy Hazra, who had already been arrested in the same illegal land-grabbing case,” the state government counsel argued.

At the conclusion of the hearing, the bench rejected Roy’s anticipatory bail plea.
