Guwahati, June 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly and Congress MLA, Wazed Ali Choudhury, on Tuesday strongly defended Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, rejecting suggestions by AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal that senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain should replace him as the state party chief.
Speaking to reporters, Choudhury asserted that Gogoi was the right leader to head the Congress in Assam and dismissed Ajmal's remarks as unwarranted interference in the internal affairs of the party.
“Gaurav Gogoi is a suitable leader. Gaurav Gogoi is there and will remain there. The Congress is not the Muslim League; it is a secular party. Badruddin Ajmal has no right to speak on matters relating to Gaurav Gogoi or the Congress leadership,” Choudhury said.
The Congress leader's response came a day after Ajmal weighed in on the leadership issue within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
The AIUDF supremo had suggested that Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain should be made the APCC president in place of Gogoi. Ajmal argued that Hussain's vast political experience, organisational skills and strong grassroots connect could help strengthen the Congress in Assam ahead of future electoral battles.
However, Choudhury maintained that the Congress leadership would decide organisational matters and that opinions from leaders of rival political parties carried little significance. He further expressed confidence in the Congress' prospects in Assam and claimed that the party would emerge victorious in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency whenever by-elections are held.
According to Choudhury, Congress workers across the state remain united behind the current leadership and are focused on strengthening the organisation.
The exchange of remarks has triggered fresh political debate in Assam, where both the Congress and AIUDF have traditionally competed for opposition space against the ruling BJP-led alliance.
