From Gangs of Wasseypur to Gullak 5: Jameel Khan Opens Up on His Journey, Says “Gullak Has Become a Landmark in My Career”

Actor Jameel Khan, widely remembered for his impactful role in the cult crime epic Gangs of Wasseypur, has come a long way from intense gangster drama to the soft, heartfelt world of Gullak. As the beloved slice-of-life series enters its fifth season on Sony LIV, the actor is opening up about how deeply the show has shaped his career and emotional connection with audiences.

Talking about what Gullak means to him, Jameel Khan reflected on his journey and said, “Oh man, so much—an immense amount! Gangs of Wasseypur belongs to a completely different genre—it’s a cult classic, in fact—and I feel a deep sense of pride in having been a part of that film. It was released in two parts, and my character appeared in both installments, receiving a great deal of appreciation. Following that, Gullak represents a distinct phase—a significant milestone—that has truly become a landmark in my career.”

“The unique beauty of Gullak—or perhaps of this specific format—is that from its inception in 2019 right up to today in 2026, the audience's love has remained absolutely undiminished. The respect, the popularity, and—most importantly—the sheer affection I receive from the audience are all gifts bestowed upon me by Gullak. I pray that Gullak continues its journey, that it keeps evolving and adding new dimensions, and that the love from the people remains constant. As long as that love keeps flowing in, success and popularity will inevitably follow” added Jameel.

When asked about whether there is pressure in carrying forward a show that has successfully reached its fifth season, the actor dismissed the idea of stress and instead emphasized trust in the writing and team. He said, “Pressure? Oh man, there really isn't any pressure. The only pressure that exists is the expectation that you have to deliver—that you must not fall short of the standard you set previously. However, the writing is so excellent, the team is so fantastic, and the synergy between TVF and Sony LIV is so perfect that we are provided with a truly exceptional platform—a solid foundation upon which to work.”

“And when you receive material and writing of this caliber, our job as professionals becomes significantly easier. It really boils down to exactly what you mentioned: the audience's expectations. People often assume that after a strong Season 1, the quality will inevitably dip in Season 2, 3, or 4. But Gullak hasn't faltered; it hasn't dropped in quality at all. The credit for this goes to the creators, to TVF, to Sony LIV, and to the entire Gullak team. It is a testament to everyone's immense hard work, dedication, honesty, simplicity, integrity, and—above all—the unwavering passion with which everyone approaches their work. That passion has never diminished, and I pray that it continues to burn just as brightly in the future—perhaps even carrying us all the way to Season 60” added Jameel.

Created under the direction of Shreyansh Pandey and Abhay Raut, Gullak Season 5 continues the journey of the Mishra family with returning cast members including Geetanjali Kulkarni, Harsh Mayar, Anant V. Joshi, Shivankit Singh Parihar, and Sunita Rajwar. The series continues to stream from June 5, 2026, capturing the everyday charm of middle-class family life that has made it a long-standing audience favourite.
