Vipul Amrutlal Shah On Manoj Bajpayee: "Even After 30 Years, His Vulnerability Sets Him Apart"

Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has opened up about his long-standing association with actor Manoj Bajpayee while speaking about their upcoming historical thriller Governor: The Silent Saviour.

Reflecting on his personal journey with the actor and the bond shared within the theatre community, Vipul Shah said, "We have known each other since the days when—uh—we used to meet every night at various hangouts. He used to be with his group; Ontos was his bar, while we used to be at Utsav. So—uh—it was during those "theater days" that I first got to know him. And I’ve known him ever since. Of course, Shefali worked with him in Satya. So, naturally— We theater people, you know, share a deep bond—even if we aren't currently working together. We hold immense admiration for the incredible work that Manoj has done. And then, of course, you look at his entire body of work—from Satya right up to Banda now.”

“There are a number of films in which he has delivered landmark performances. And—and the way he transitions from one character to another... If you watch Satya and then watch Aligarh, you simply cannot imagine that the same actor played both roles. You watch Banda and then watch Gangs of Wasseypur, and you see just how effortlessly he embodies both.”

“So, as he himself just mentioned, about four or five years ago, I approached him with this idea: that we wanted to make this film. And we told him, 'We want only you to play this part.' We both waited all this while for the script to be finalized. And, of course, once Chinmay came on board, the process accelerated. There is one more thing—as he himself just pointed out—regarding the vulnerability of an actor while working on a film like this... You know, after working for so many years—winning so many National Awards, numerous other accolades, and delivering so many amazing performances—an actor tends to become complacent. I know that firsthand. And here was an actor who was so vulnerable that—as he confessed today—he admitted, 'I was getting stuck.' And Chinmay—because he himself is a fantastic actor and a terrific director—was right there to, you know, steer him out of that situation. If you possess that kind of vulnerability even after 30 years of amazing work... I will say this—I have said it many times, and I will say it again: Mr. Manoj Bajpayee is the reason why" added Shah.

The film also features Adah Sharma, Madhoo Shah, and Noushad Mohamed Kunju in key roles.

Governor: The Silent Saviour is set against the backdrop of India’s 1990–1991 economic crisis and follows a fictionalized narrative inspired by the role of RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan, who becomes central to a high-stakes mission involving a secret gold airlift operation intended to stabilize the country’s collapsing economy.

With its intense political backdrop, period setting, and performance-driven storytelling, the film is shaping up as one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of 2026.
