MVA to contest all 17 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats, final formula soon

Mumbai, May 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is set to contest all 17 upcoming Legislative Council seats in Maharashtra, including 16 seats to be elected from local self-government bodies and one bypoll seat in Nagpur. The elections to these 17 seats are scheduled for June 18. Preliminary discussions regarding the seat-sharing formula concluded on Wednesday.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Harshvardhan Sapkal said another meeting would be held within the next two days, after which the final seat-sharing arrangement would be officially announced with unanimous consensus.

He was speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting of MVA leaders to deliberate on the Legislative Council elections. The meeting was attended by Harshvardhan Sapkal (Congress state president), Shashikant Shinde (NCP-SP state president), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP Working President), Anil Parab (Shiv Sena leader and MLC), Ambadas Danve (former Leader of Opposition) and Milind Narvekar (Shiv Sena leader). Sapkal also launched a scathing attack on the ruling alliance.

“The BJP does not believe in democracy and has resorted to horse-trading in elections. The second act of ‘throw money and watch the show’ has begun, with corporators being poached by offering advance payments of Rs 5 lakh. In such a scenario, the Maha Vikas Aghadi will fight the Legislative Council elections unitedly to protect democracy and the Constitution,” he alleged.

Sapkal further claimed that there was complete harmony within the MVA over seat-sharing and that there was no internal conflict among the alliance partners.

In contrast, he alleged that internal friction and discontent were brewing within the ruling “triple-engine government” over its own seat-sharing arrangements.

Highlighting the recent agrarian protests, Sapkal said the MVA had staged a massive agitation in Chandwad in Nashik district, demanding a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 3,000 per quintal for onions. The protest included a three-hour rasta roko agitation.

“The BJP-Mahayuti government tried to suppress the agitation using police force, but the Fadnavis government was severely rattled by the sheer unity and strength of the farmers. It is precisely because of this pressure that an emergency meeting on the onion crisis is being held today in Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” Sapkal said.

“Do not return from Delhi empty-handed. Ensure you bring substantial relief and financial assistance for our farmers,” he added.
