The High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Mauritius, Mr Muhammad Arshad Jan Pathan, called on the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the New Treasury Building, in Port Louis, this afternoon.

The newly appointed High Commissioner conveyed the greetings and well wishes of the Pakistani Prime Minister, Mr Imran Khan, to his Mauritian counterpart and to the people of Mauritius.

In a statement following the meeting, Mr Muhammad Arshad Jan Pathan said that discussions with the Prime Minister focused on opportunities and areas of cooperation where both countries could work together such as in cultural, trade and other domain of mutual interest. “In this regard, tourism has been identified as having the most potential for cooperation, with Mauritius having expertise in this sector,” he pointed out.

Talking about the Preferential Trade Agreement with Mauritius, the Pakistani High Commissioner indicated that the bilateral trade had not increased that much so that the Government of Pakistan would be carrying out a study, very shortly, to find out precisely which spheres of activity would be beneficial and complementary for both countries.  “There is some huge potential for products like rice and cement, as well as in agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors where trade can be enhanced, together with exports from Mauritius,” he underlined.

The possibilities of joint ventures and for Pakistani investors to come to Mauritius to explore cooperation in fields of mutual benefits were also highlighted during the meeting with the Prime Minister.

Earlier today, two Special Envoys of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, namely, Mr Alvin Botes, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation and Ambassador Welile Nhlapo, Former Permanent Representative to the African Union, met with Prime Minister Jugnauth.
