Veteran actress Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das mourns the demise of eminent women's rights activist, poet and author Kamla Bhasin, who passed away on September 25. She was 75.
Bhasin has been a prominent voice in the women's movement in India and other South Asian countries. She also features on a special episode of Aamir Khan’s show Satyameva Jayate.
Actor and director Nandita Das took to her social media and shared, “I am devastated to hear the news. I knew Kamala since I was 18. She was my friend & mentor. She has taught me as much about optimism, as about feminism. As much about life, as about death. And now she is gone. Deeply saddened. Nov 2015 - one of the many fun times we had together”
Actor Shabana Azmi wrote two part tweet. It read, “Feisty #Kamla Bhasin has fought her last battle, singing and celebrating a life well lived.Her absence will be felt acutely, her gutsy presence, laughter and song, her wonderful strength are her legacy...We treasure her now as we did before. Aruna Roy”
The second one read, “I always thought #KamlaBhasin was invincible n so she remained till the end…There was no dichotomy between what she said and what she did. We at ActionAid will be poorer by her loss as will the thousands whose life she touched! Lets celebrate her life and contribution RIP”
The chant of 'Azaadi' which echoed across protest sites in the country is said to have been popularised by Bhasin as a feminist slogan against patriarchy.
