Delhi Police ASI dies at training centre, family cries foul
New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Police died after complaining of chest pain at the Police Training Centre at north Delhi's Wazirabad early on Wednesday morning, a police officer said.

Suresh Kaushik, 52, was sleeping in his barrack when he complained of uneasiness and chest pain to his roommates. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead by the doctors.

"Kaushik was promoted as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) last month following which he joined a three-month-long indoor training at the Police Training Centre from April 1. He went on five days election duty this month and resumed his training on Monday," Anil Mittal, Additional PRO of the Delhi Police told IANS.

Kaushik's family, however, alleged that he died due to a delay in the arrival of the ambulance. "He was a heart patient and we had already informed the Police Department about it. However, he was given rigorous tasks and strict punishment during his training due to which his health suffered," said Ramesh Sharma, a family member.

Mittal denied the allegations saying: "Medical investigation showed that Kaushik wasn't feeling well for a while that night. But by the time he informed his roommates his condition had deteriorated. The ambulance was called on time and he was immediately taken to hospital but he died on the way."

The APRO also denied allegations of the deceased being punished during training. "It was a very easy indoor training on law and IPC (Indian Penal Code) Sections. A joint physical training (PT) session was held for the cadets every morning, but no strict punishment was ever meted out to Kaushik," he said.

"The cause of the ASI's death will be established after the autopsy," the officer added.
