India closely following Afghan peace process: Government

New Delhi, Jan 31 (IANS) India is closely following the Afghan peace process undertaken by different stakeholders and supports all such efforts, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday.

"We are very closely following the developments related to peace and reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan which have been undertaken by different stakeholders," Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a media briefing here.

"India supports efforts which can achieve an inclusive political settlement," Kumar said.

Stating that it is important that the presidential election in Afghanistan takes place according to schedule, he said India continues to support an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled process.

"We also feel that for enduring peace and stability in Afghanistan, the terrorist safe havens and sanctuaries need to be eliminated," the spokesperson said.

"We will participate in all formats of talks which could bring about peace and security in that region."

Kumar's comments come after Pakistan earlier this month ruled out India's role in the Afghan peace process.

The US and Russia are undertaking separate processes to bring peace in the war-ravaged country.

Both Washington and Moscow are engaging with the Taliban, whereas New Delhi's stated position is not to talk with the Taliban.
