British High Commission organises event on LGBTQIA

British High Commission organises event on LGBTQIANew Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) The British High Commission and the Multiple Action Research Group (MARG) partnered to celebrate the recent "Delhi Pride March" through an event held here on Friday.

The event, "Breaking Stereotypes", recognised MARG's work, along with that of LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) activists around the world.

"Breaking Stereotypes" brought together people from all walks of life -- a diverse group of men, women and transgender persons from different professional, educational and cultural backgrounds, an official statement said.

The event highlighted the experiences and talents of the LGBTQIA people to a wider audience, raising awareness of the issues faced by the community.

"I have been inspired by the people I have met today and feel proud that we are collaborating and engaging with them on such an important area," Hannah Cockburn, First Secretary, Bilateral Affairs, British High Commission said.

"The British government is committed to building an inclusive society for everyone - no matter their gender or sexuality - and to engaging on the interests of the LGBTQIA community globally."

"I am really pleased that we have been able to do that today (Friday) with a creative, exciting and vibrant event that bought together people from across the LGBTQIA community," she said.

MARG is a forerunner in the field of access to justice and legal empowerment. Since 1985, it has dedicated itself to the legal empowerment of disadvantaged and the marginalised groups through legal awareness, socio-legal research, advocacy initiatives and legal aid.

It has worked both at the grassroots and policy-making levels.
