Rome, April 27 (IANS/AKI) Italy's president Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday called on Italy's Parliament to rapidly approve a new electoral law for both of its houses.
During a meeting with chamber of deputies speaker Laura Boldrini and Senate speaker Pietro Grasso at Rome's Quirinal Palace Wednesday, Mattarella also said the Parliament needed to elect a Constitutional Court judge.
The Senate is elected on a proportional voting system under Italy's current electoral law. In the lower house, a political party will automatically be allocated 54 per cent of the seats it gets 40 per cent of votes or if it wins a run-off between the two largest parties should neither obtain 40 per cent of ballots in the first round of voting.
Mattarella has frequently urged the Parliament to harmonise the electoral laws for both houses.
Italy is currently being ruled by the caretaker centre-left government of Paolo Gentiloni after former premier Matteo Renzi resigned in the wake of his crushing defeat in a constitutional referendum in December.
National polls are due by February next year, and many observers predict these will be called sooner.
