Delhi EC publishes draft electoral rolls

New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS) The State Election Commission on Saturday published the draft electoral rolls of Delhi for the year 2017, Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Chandra Bhushan Kumar said.

During a press conference held at his office here, Kumar also revealed the new "coloured voter ID cards" which would be issued to all new registered voters.

"The new card looks smart and also has a number of security features," he said.

Announcing the publication of the draft electoral rolls, Kumar also invited young citizens turning 18 years on or before January 1 to become part of the electoral rolls "in the largest democracy in the world".

"The final E-roll will be published on January 10, 2017," he added.

The draft electoral rolls were published on Saturday as part of the Special Summary Revision (SSR), which is a time-bound annual programme of electoral rolls revision announced by the Election Commission of India.

SSR includes rationalisation of polling stations apart from continuous updation and deletions in the electoral rolls during the year.

"Whole month of October is kept for filing claims and objections. During this period, various activities will be organised to create awareness among voters like Resident Welfare Association (RWA) meetings, reading of E-rolls in 'gram sabhas'," the CEO said.

"The claims and objections filed by citizens will be disposed by November 30 this year. Database will be updated by December 24 and final E-rolls will be published on January 10 next year," he added.

There are over 1.3 crore registered voters in the draft electoral rolls, out of which around 74.2 lakh are male voters and around 59.7 lakh are female voters.
