Syrian President says 'real' negotiations not on in Geneva

Damascus, June 7 (IANS) Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday said there were no "real" negotiations between the government and the opposition in Geneva, where both parties were convened by the UN.

In a televised speech on Tuesday before the country's new parliament, the Syrian leader pointed out that the "real talks" have not yet begun and the "statement of principles" submitted by the Syrian government's negotiating team, has not been answered, EFE news reported.

Assad made his remarks in his first address to the newly elected parliament, when he also congratulated lawmakers on an record turnout during the election in April.

The Syrian President believes that any political process which does not start, continue and finish with putting an end to terrorism has no "meaning" and will have "no desired results".
