Patna, Sep 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The alleged harassment of two minor students, including a girl, in Bihar’s Jamui district has triggered a political row, with the Opposition accusing the government of failing to maintain law and order and the ruling JD-U defending the administration’s response.
JD-U state president Umesh Kushwaha described the incident as isolated and said the government was sensitive to such matters. He asserted that the administration was taking action against those allegedly involved.
“We are sensitive to such isolated incidents when they occur. But look back at the time before 2005, what was Bihar like then? Did anyone even step out of their homes? Today, at least when an incident occurs, the administration acts. Those who committed the crime, no matter how big, will soon be in police custody,” Kushwaha said.
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh also defended the Bihar Police. He said law and order in Bihar was secure today, contrasting it with the past. “Back then, women were afraid to step out of their homes after sunset, whereas today, they venture out at midnight, 1 AM, 2 AM, and even 4 AM,” Singh remarked.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) launched a sharp attack on the government. RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav alleged that the rule of law was being undermined and questioned the government’s ability to protect women and girls. “Where are the Bihar Police and the Bihar government?” he asked, claiming that the dignity and safety of women were being compromised.
Bihar Police ADG (Law and Order) K.S. Anupam said three minor accused had been taken into custody so far, two of them reportedly between 17 and 18 years old. “An FIR has been registered at Jamui police station under Sections 128, 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), along with Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” Anupam stated.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to ensure a speedy and impartial probe, with the Jamui SDPO supervising the investigation. Police have identified around seven to eight youths whose alleged roles are being examined, while their criminal histories are also being verified.
The police cyber team has initiated action to prevent further circulation of the video on social media. According to ADG Anupam, the police have initiated takedown action against 32 social-media accounts, including 13 Facebook accounts, 12 Instagram accounts and seven accounts on X. He warned that circulating material revealing the identity or face of a minor victim could attract legal action and appealed to the public not to share or repost the video.
According to Anupam, the incident took place in a hilly area approximately three kilometres from the Jamui-Lakhisarai main road between 6:25 pm and 6:30 pm on September 19. Police will also review patrolling arrangements in and around the location to determine whether there was any lapse in policing.
Authorities have maintained that anyone found involved will face legal action. The investigation is continuing, with police examining video footage and other evidence to establish the roles of the remaining suspects. The identities of the minor victims are being kept confidential in accordance with legal requirements.
