Kerala: PSC appointments under LDF rule must be reviewed, says BJP

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) BJP MLA and former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan on Monday demanded a comprehensive investigation into all appointments made through the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) during the previous LDF government and called for a review of the appointments.

His statement came on a day when two PSC members appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for questioning in connection with alleged irregularities.

PSC chairman Dr M.R. Baiju has also been served a notice to appear before the SIT on Wednesday.

Muraleedharan accused the V.D. Satheesan government of protecting those responsible for the alleged irregularities instead of taking action against them.

On Sunday, news surfaced that the outgoing Governor Rajendra V.Arlekar wrote to the President of India to take action against the PSC board.

He said the CPI(M)'s opposition to the Governor's action was understandable, but questioned why the Congress and the UDF were also opposing it.

Chief Minister Satheesan had informed the Assembly on Monday that the state police chief had received 180 complaints related to PSC irregularities.

He had also said that three complaints received through the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms had been forwarded to the Home Department for a Crime Branch investigation.

With so many complaints coming to light, the government should investigate the allegations and take action against those responsible, Muraleedharan said.

He said the Governor had sought an explanation from the PSC secretary on August 21, based on the complaints.

The recommendation to the President had followed this step.

Both the ruling and opposition parties had alleged that the Governor's action was unconstitutional.

They should explain the basis for their allegations, he said.

Muraleedharan also referred to the court's recent criticism of the ruling and opposition parties for allegedly protecting each other when action should have been taken against those involved in the irregularities.

The government's failure to change its position despite the court's observations amounted to a challenge to the people, he said.

He demanded that the government review all PSC appointments made during the LDF's tenure, question the main accused and take action against those found responsible.

Such steps were essential to restore public confidence in the PSC, Muraleedharan added.
