Imtiaz Ali Reveals How Subhash Ghai Rescued Socha Na Tha and Why Their Relationship Turned Sour

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has opened up about the unexpected role veteran director Subhash Ghai played in bringing his directorial debut, Socha Na Tha, to theatres. Starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia, the 2005 romantic comedy marked the beginning of Ali's journey as a filmmaker, but its release was far from straightforward. During a recent appearance at the Celebrate Cinema Festival 2026 at Ghai's Whistling Woods International, Ali recalled how the legendary filmmaker stepped in when his first film was struggling to secure a release. He also revealed how a professional disagreement later created tension between the two, offering an interesting glimpse into a relationship that has seen both generosity and friction.

Speaking about his equation with Ghai, Ali explained that their relationship had not always been smooth, despite the significant help he received early in his career. Recalling the circumstances surrounding Socha Na Tha, he said, "I have always had a relationship with Subhash-ji, though it hasn't always been smooth sailing. There was a time when he was quite angry with me—the reason dates back quite a bit. Let me explain: when my first film, Socha Na Tha, was made, he liked it. Actually, there’s something you might not know—Socha Na Tha was stuck; it wasn't getting a release due to some issues involving the producer."

Ali then revealed how Ghai first came across the film and what prompted him to step in. According to the director, Ghai's wife, whom Ali affectionately referred to as Bhabhi, had watched the film during a Censor Board screening, as she was a member of the board. She liked what she saw and encouraged her husband to watch it. Ghai subsequently arranged a screening, watched the film and decided to help. Ali continued, "Subhash-ji watched the film—I only recently learned that his wife, Bhabhi, had seen it at a Censor Board screening (she was a member of the board) and liked it, so she told him to watch it. He called for a screening and saw the film; at that time, it wasn't being released, but he really liked it. He bought the negative rights for a price higher than necessary just so the film could be released. That is how my first film finally came out."

For Ali, the intervention was particularly meaningful because he had never met Ghai before the filmmaker decided to support his debut. The gesture helped Socha Na Tha reach audiences at a crucial point in Ali's early career. Reflecting on the kindness he received, the filmmaker added, "I had never met Subhash Ghai before that. People in the film industry show each other such kindness—perhaps because we’re all a bit eccentric." His recollection highlighted a lesser-known chapter in the making of a film that would eventually introduce audiences to the storytelling sensibility that became a defining feature of his career.

However, the relationship later encountered a difficult phase when Ghai signed Ali for another film that ultimately did not materialise. Ali clarified that the project fell through because circumstances did not work out, rather than because he deliberately walked away from a commitment. Explaining how the situation affected their equation, he said, "After that, he signed me for a film, but it ultimately didn't happen—not because of me, but simply because things didn't work out. I told him, 'Sorry Sir, I won't be able to do it,' and so on. He was very angry with me for a while, but later, when we went to Mauritius, I found a way to smooth things over." The anecdote revealed how a professional misunderstanding created distance between the two, even after Ghai had played such an important role in Ali's first film reaching theatres.

Released on March 4, 2005, Socha Na Tha starred Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia in a romantic comedy directed by Ali in his feature-film debut. The film received positive reviews and became an important starting point for the director, who later went on to make films such as Jab We Met, Rockstar, Highway and Tamasha. Ali's reunion with Ghai at Celebrate Cinema Festival 2026 brought their shared history back into focus. Ghai has also recently praised Ali's 2026 directorial film Main Vaapas Aaunga. Their story serves as a reminder that relationships in the film industry can evolve through professional disagreements, personal understanding and acts of generosity that leave a lasting impression. In Ali's case, Ghai's decision to help release Socha Na Tha remains a defining moment in the early chapter of his filmmaking journey.
