The story unfolds 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, as Los Angeles emerges into a fragile new existence. However, this future has not been rebuilt by humanity alone. The series follows Cora, played by Schafer, a fugitive who has spent her life running and is desperate to secure a different future. In one final attempt to escape her past, she assumes a new identity and becomes a Blade Runner, placing herself in the dangerous world she once sought to avoid.
Cora's journey brings her into an uneasy partnership with Olwen, played by Yeoh, a replicant from an earlier era who is approaching the end of her life. Together, the two pursue another runaway whose hidden truth threatens to destabilise their already fragile city. The trailer teases a tense investigation set against a futuristic landscape, with the characters forced to confront questions of identity, survival and the consequences of humanity's technological ambitions. Its ominous tagline, “Welcome to a future we no longer control,” sets the tone for the series.
The casting of Yeoh and Schafer brings together two performers known for their distinctive screen presence. Yeoh plays Olwen, whose experience and mortality place her at the centre of the story's exploration of replicant existence, while Schafer's Cora is a human trying to escape the forces that have shaped her life. Their partnership is expected to drive the narrative as the series examines the boundaries between humans and replicants in a world where those distinctions are increasingly complicated.
The ensemble cast also includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi. The series is created and showrun by Silka Luisa, whose previous work includes Shining Girls, Halo and Strange Angel. Jonathan van Tulleken directs episodes of the production, which features writing contributions from Claire Kiechel, Kirsa Rein, Tom Spezialy, Monika Revilla, Ryan Willison and Luisa.
The Blade Runner universe began with Ridley Scott's 1982 science-fiction film, inspired by Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It later expanded with Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, which continued the franchise's exploration of artificial intelligence, memory and identity. Rather than simply repeating the earlier films' stories, Blade Runner 2099 moves further into the future, opening a new chapter in a world shaped by technological progress and moral uncertainty.
Blade Runner 2099 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on November 25, 2026. With its combination of a familiar dystopian universe, a new mystery and a cast led by Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, the series aims to expand one of science fiction's most enduring worlds while exploring what remains of humanity in a future that may no longer be under its control.
