The story begins as Norway’s ailing King Harald Fairhair faces the difficult task of naming his successor. Erik Bloodaxe, a ruthless heir committed to the old pagan ways, believes the throne is rightfully his. However, his claim faces growing opposition, with his younger brother Haakon emerging as his most formidable rival. Raised in Christian Wessex under the ambitious King Athelstan, Haakon prepares to return to Norway with the backing of an English fleet, setting the stage for a confrontation that could change the kingdom’s future.
As the brothers’ rivalry intensifies, Bloodaxe explores a kingdom caught between competing beliefs, political ambitions and the desire for absolute power. Erik’s fight to secure his position becomes increasingly dangerous as enemies close in and loyalties begin to shift. The conflict extends beyond the royal family, drawing in powerful Scandinavian rulers and an influential English king. With brother turning against brother and the old order beginning to crumble, the season builds towards an apocalyptic siege that threatens to engulf Erik’s stronghold.
At the heart of the series is Erik Bloodaxe’s rise as one of the most recognisable figures associated with Norse history, alongside his formidable wife, Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings. Jessica Madsen plays Gunnhild, a central figure in the struggle for power as the kingdom descends into chaos. Their fight to secure the Norwegian throne unfolds amid bloody betrayals, dangerous alliances and an increasingly uncertain political landscape. The series brings together historical drama and action while exploring the personal and political costs of ambition.
The ensemble cast also features Karlis Arnolds Avots as Karlis, alongside Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen. Together, the cast brings to life a world shaped by royal rivalries, religious conflict and the struggle for control of a fractured kingdom. With its focus on the clash between the old Norse traditions and the growing influence of Christianity, the series places its characters at the centre of a transformative period in the region’s history.
Created and written by filmmaking duo Horatio Hirst and Michael Hirst, Bloodaxe brings together a historical setting and a dramatic narrative built around succession, family conflict and warfare. The series features episodes directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, adding to the creative team behind the ambitious production. As the first-look teaser introduces viewers to the world of Erik Bloodaxe and the battle for Norway, the show sets up a saga in which personal loyalties and the fate of a kingdom are inseparably linked.
With its royal power struggle, Norse setting and impending siege, Bloodaxe is gearing up to bring a new historical action saga to streaming audiences. The series premieres on Prime Video on January 20, 2027, with Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen and Levi Miller leading the cast in a story of ambition, betrayal and a kingdom on the brink of war.
