J&K: Two killed, five injured in Rajouri road accident

Jammu, Oct 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Two persons were killed and five others injured in a road accident in J&K's Rajouri district on Friday.

Officials said two persons were killed and five others injured on Friday evening in a road accident in the Moghla-Teryath area of Rajouri district.

According to officials, the accident occurred around 6 p.m. when a passenger vehicle went out of the driver's control and skidded off the road.

Two persons died on the spot, while five others sustained injuries.

Police, with the assistance of residents, shifted the injured to a hospital. The condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident, and further details are awaited, officials said.

Road accidents in J&K are often attributed to a combination of human error, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.

Driving beyond prescribed speed limits and making sudden manoeuvres are among the major causes of accidents.

Risky overtaking on sharp curves, narrow mountain roads and steep stretches frequently leads to head-on collisions or vehicles plunging into gorges.

Roads in hilly areas of J&K feature sharp bends, steep gradients, narrow carriageways and accident-prone black spots with inadequate guardrails, safety walls or signage.

Heavy rainfall, snowfall, fog, poor visibility, landslides and falling boulders can significantly reduce vehicle control and road-surface traction.

Overloading of passenger vehicles, public transport and commercial carriers can strain braking systems and destabilise vehicles on steep slopes.

Failure to use seat belts and helmets significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries and head trauma.

Long hours of driving on difficult mountain routes may also lead to fatigue, while impaired driving further slows reaction times in emergency situations.

Among the safety measures recommended for highway travel are adherence to speed limits and observance of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signage, particularly on key corridors.

Driving by minors is prohibited and punishable under the law. Parents may face imprisonment of up to three years and fines of up to Rs 25,000 if a minor is found driving.

Mountain routes such as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) are susceptible to closures due to landslides, fog or snowfall. Travellers are advised to check traffic advisories and official updates before commencing their journey.
