Aamir Khan Says AI Can Bring Your Vision to Life but Its Impact Depends on How You Use It

Aamir Khan has shared a thoughtful perspective on the growing use of artificial intelligence in cinema, emphasising that AI can be a powerful creative tool when used for the right reasons. During his interaction with the media at Whistling Woods International in Mumbai, the Bollywood superstar explained that technology itself cannot be labelled good or bad; its impact ultimately depends on the people using it. With AI increasingly finding its way into filmmaking, from visual effects to digital environments and creative experimentation, Aamir believes the real question is not whether the technology should be used, but how effectively filmmakers can use it to bring their ideas to life. His remarks highlight the opportunities AI offers while placing responsibility firmly in the hands of those who control it.

Speaking about the impact of artificial intelligence on filmmaking, Aamir said, “Well, look, AI is a technology, you know. Whenever a new technology emerges, it gets absorbed into filmmaking. When people use it well, the impact is positive, and audiences appreciate it. Conversely, if it isn't used correctly, the reaction isn't favorable. So, it really depends on how you use it. You know, technology is just technology; it doesn't have a life of its own. We are the ones who breathe life into it or make it serve our purpose.” His comments underline an important distinction: AI can support creativity, improve production processes and open up new possibilities, but the outcome depends on the intention and judgement behind its use. In the wrong hands, the same technology could be used in ways that undermine the creative experience or fail to connect with audiences.

Aamir further explained that artificial intelligence and visual effects serve a similar purpose for filmmakers by helping them translate ideas into images that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to create. Comparing the two, he said, “Whether it’s VFX or AI, as a filmmaker, I see them as essentially the same thing. There was a time when you couldn't always translate the visions you conceived in your mind onto the screen because the facilities and technology simply weren't advanced enough back then. Today, whatever you can imagine, you can visualize. So, it is a tool—one that you need to know how to use effectively.” His perspective captures one of AI's biggest creative advantages: it can help filmmakers visualise ambitious concepts, build imaginative worlds and explore possibilities that were once restricted by technical limitations or production budgets. However, having access to powerful tools does not automatically guarantee meaningful storytelling.

The potential benefits of AI become particularly clear when it is used to solve creative challenges rather than replace creative thinking. Filmmakers could use the technology to develop visual concepts, experiment with scene designs, plan complex sequences or explore different ways to communicate an idea before committing resources to production. Used thoughtfully, these applications can help translate a director's imagination into something audiences can experience on screen. At the same time, careless use of AI can result in visuals that lack emotional depth or storytelling purpose. Aamir's comments suggest that the value of any technological advancement lies in what the filmmaker achieves with it, rather than the technology itself. A spectacular visual may grab attention, but it is the story, performances and emotions that ultimately give a film its lasting impact.

Aamir's own filmography offers examples of how creative vision can shape the cinematic experience in different ways. Films such as PK and Dhoom 3 explored ambitious concepts and visual spectacle, while Taare Zameen Par and Dangal demonstrated how emotionally grounded storytelling can connect with audiences. His film Laal Singh Chaddha also used visual effects as part of its storytelling approach, integrating its central character into significant moments in Indian history. More recently, Sitaare Zameen Par continued his association with stories centred on human connection and personal growth. Although these films reflect different filmmaking approaches, they reinforce the broader principle behind Aamir's remarks: technology is most effective when it serves the creative vision rather than becoming the main attraction.

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, the film industry will have to navigate both its creative possibilities and the questions surrounding its responsible use. AI can help filmmakers bring extraordinary ideas to life, but its misuse can also raise concerns about originality, authenticity and the role of human creativity. Aamir Khan's message offers a practical way to approach this changing landscape: embrace the tools that help tell better stories, understand their limitations and use them with purpose. Ultimately, AI may expand what filmmakers can imagine on screen, but the ability to give those images meaning still depends on human creativity. The technology can help realise a vision; deciding whether that vision is worth telling remains the filmmaker's responsibility.
