Directed by Prem Modi, Tum Rahe Na Tum stars Jimmy Shergill and Divya Dutta in the lead, with Tanishka Tiwari, Harsh Chhaya, Zarina Wahab and Rajesh Jais in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Vinni Chawla, Vrinda Chawla and Sonu Katyal under the banner Fanatically Filmi Pvt. Ltd. The screenplay has been written by Rakesh Kumar Tripathi, while Vikramjit Roy serves as Executive Producer. Dipankar “Jojo” Chaki is also the Executive Producer and Sound Designer, adding another significant creative voice to the project.
What makes Tum Rahe Na Tum particularly intriguing is its source material. The film is an adaptation of Swedish playwright August Strindberg’s landmark play The Father, but instead of simply transplanting the original story, the filmmakers have reimagined its psychological and emotional core within a contemporary Indian family setting. The result is a story that examines how questions of control, identity and trust can slowly destabilise even the most intimate relationships.
Set against the backdrop of a hill town in Uttarakhand, the film revolves around a husband and wife whose disagreement over their daughter’s future gradually spirals into a deeply disturbing battle for control. What initially appears to be a family disagreement begins to expose much deeper insecurities, emotional wounds and questions surrounding power and inheritance. As the conflict intensifies, the film asks a fascinating question — who actually gets to decide what is best for a child, and what happens when parents themselves cannot agree on reality, responsibility and the future?
Rather than presenting its characters as simple heroes or villains, Tum Rahe Na Tum appears to place two deeply flawed individuals inside a complicated emotional and social system. The film explores patriarchy, parental expectations and insecurity while looking at how these forces can influence choices, relationships and even the way people perceive one another. At its heart, the story seems less interested in deciding who is right and more interested in showing how easily love, marriage and family can become tangled with power.
With its world premiere at IFFSA Toronto, Tum Rahe Na Tum is now ready to introduce its intensely Indian yet universally relatable family conflict to an international festival audience. The combination of Jimmy Shergill and Divya Dutta, the psychological depth of Strindberg’s source material and Prem Modi’s contemporary Indian adaptation makes this one an intriguing festival title to watch. As the film premieres on October 10, audiences will finally get to experience a story where the fight over a daughter’s future becomes something much bigger — a battle over identity, marriage, control and the fragile bonds holding a family together.
