‘Power of one vote’: CM Sarma on delivery of Bongaigaon Medical College promise

Guwahati, Oct 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday highlighted the state government's development agenda while inaugurating the Bongaigaon Medical College, saying the project reflected the principle of completing and inaugurating works for which foundation stones had been laid.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma said the foundation stone of the medical college was laid in 2021 and that the same project had now been completed and inaugurated.

Referring to the role of public support in development initiatives, Sarma said, “The power of your one vote” had enabled governments to implement such projects.

He said it was the principle of his government that every project for which a foundation stone was laid should also be completed and inaugurated.

“In 2021, the foundation stone of Bongaigaon Medical College was laid, and today, by the grace of the Lord, we have been blessed with the good fortune to inaugurate that very medical college,” he said.

The inauguration forms part of Assam’s broader effort to expand medical education and healthcare infrastructure beyond Guwahati and other major urban centres.

The state government has been pursuing a policy of establishing medical colleges across Assam’s districts to improve access to specialised healthcare and increase the availability of trained doctors.

Over the past few years, several new medical colleges have been established or initiated in different parts of the state as the government seeks to strengthen Assam’s medical education network.

The expansion is also aimed at reducing the dependence of patients from remote and rural areas on major hospitals in Guwahati for advanced treatment.

The Bongaigaon Medical College is expected to serve patients from Bongaigaon and neighbouring districts while providing opportunities for local students to pursue medical education closer to home.

The Assam government has repeatedly stated that its long-term objective is to establish at least one medical college in every district of the state.

The initiative is being pursued alongside the expansion of hospitals, medical education facilities and other healthcare infrastructure.

The government has also linked the expansion of medical colleges with the need to increase the number of doctors and healthcare professionals in the state.

Sarma has frequently described the expansion of medical infrastructure as a key component of the state's development strategy, particularly for improving healthcare access in areas outside major cities.

The inauguration of the Bongaigaon institution marks another step in that effort, with the Chief Minister stressing that government projects should move from foundation stones to completion and public use within a defined timeframe.
