Odisha: Rajnath Singh to attend HAL Koraput’s 2,000th aero-engine milestone event

Bhubaneswar, Oct 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to visit Odisha on October 6 to attend a special event at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facility in Sunabeda, Koraput district.

According to an official statement, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the milestone event marking the delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine by HAL’s Koraput Division on October 6.

Officials said the event will mark nearly six decades of HAL Koraput’s contribution to India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities and to the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.

The event will also highlight the establishment of a second production line for Shakti engines, with an investment of Rs 218 crore.

The additional capacity will support the growing requirements of indigenous helicopter platforms, including the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter.

According to the official statement, the event underscores the government’s vision of transforming India from a buyer of defence equipment into a designer, developer and manufacturer of defence systems.

It added that building indigenous aero-engine capability is a critical component of this vision because of the strategic importance and technological complexity of propulsion systems.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, and HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K. are among those expected to attend the event.

Established in April 1964 at Sunabeda in Odisha’s Koraput district, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) Koraput Division has played a significant role in India’s aerospace and defence sector.

The Engine Division of HAL Koraput was initially established to manufacture R11-F2/F2S turbojet engines for MiG-21FL aircraft.

It subsequently undertook the manufacture of R25-series engines for MiG-21 BIS aircraft and R29B engines for MiG-27M aircraft.

The division also established facilities for overhauling R11, R25, R29B and RD-33 engines.

From 2007-08 onwards, it began manufacturing RD-33 Series 3 engines for MiG-29 aircraft.

Its manufacturing and overhaul capabilities were subsequently expanded to cover multiple engine variants used in different fighter aircraft, strengthening the division’s role in aircraft-engine production and maintenance.
