Aizawl, Oct 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retd) on Monday said that the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) is an important initiative of the Central government and must be accorded top priority.
The Governor noted that the project has been delayed for a long time and cannot be delayed any further.
KMMTTP Project Head and government-owned IRCON International Ltd’s Myanmar Branch official Sanjay Tripathi on Monday called on the Mizoram Governor at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl and briefed him on the progress, challenges and the way forward for the 109.2-km road being constructed between Paletwa and Zorinpui under the KMMTTP.
The Governor stressed that all possible efforts must be made to ensure the successful completion of the project.
General Singh (Retd) directed that maximum progress should be achieved during the next working season. He also asked Tripathi to inform him of any difficulties being faced in implementing the project and assured his full support to ensure that it is completed at the earliest.
Tripathi, through a PowerPoint presentation, apprised the Governor of the progress achieved so far on the Paletwa-Zorinpui stretch, the road ahead, the challenges being faced, and other important issues related to the project. He reported that the overall status of the work stood at 25 per cent physical progress and 30 per cent financial progress.
The KMMTTP is eventually expected to link Mizoram with Paletwa and Sittwe Port in Myanmar, providing an alternative connectivity route for the landlocked Northeastern state to the Bay of Bengal. The KMMTTP is expected to become operational in 2027. The KMMTTP and the Bairabi-Sairang new railway link could transform Mizoram’s economy and bring significant changes in related sectors, a study committee set up by the state government said.
The Impact Study Committee on the KMMTTP and the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Link recently submitted its final draft report to Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, connecting Bairabi near southern Assam with Sairang near Aizawl, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Aizawl on September 13, 2025.
