Wake Up Sid Completes 17 Years As Dharma Productions Celebrates Sid And Aisha

Dharma Productions is taking a nostalgic trip back to Mumbai, youthful dreams and the beautiful confusion of growing up as Wake Up Sid completes 17 years. The much-loved coming-of-age film, which introduced audiences to the journey of Sid Mehra and Aisha Banerjee, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of movie lovers. On the anniversary, Dharma Productions shared a video montage filled with familiar moments from the film, bringing back the charm of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma's characters. Alongside the video, the production house summed up the film's emotional appeal with a simple message, "A little bit of growing up, a little bit of falling in love, and a whole lot of memories. Here's to 17 years of Sid and Aisha, Celebrating #17YearsOfWakeUpSid."

The anniversary post immediately takes fans back to the world of Sid and Aisha, two young people trying to figure out life in their own very different ways. The 62 second montage features several memorable moments from the film, including playful interactions, quiet conversations, rainy car rides and emotional scenes between the two characters. The visuals are also decorated with animated stars, adding a soft nostalgic touch to the celebration. Dharma Productions tagged the key names associated with the film, including Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma and Ayan Mukerji, making the anniversary tribute a celebration of the entire team behind the film.

Released on October 2, 2009, Wake Up Sid was written and directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Dharma Productions. Set against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Mumbai, the film follows Sid, a carefree young man from a wealthy family who has little idea about what he wants to do with his life. His world begins to change when he meets Aisha, an aspiring writer who has moved to Mumbai from Kolkata with her own ambitions and dreams. Their relationship becomes an important part of Sid's journey towards independence and responsibility, giving the film its warm combination of friendship, romance, humour and self discovery.

Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma brought a natural quality to Sid and Aisha that helped make their relationship feel refreshingly relatable. Sid was not presented as a perfect hero who suddenly had everything figured out, but as a young man slowly learning that growing up means taking responsibility for his choices. Aisha, meanwhile, had her own ambitions and a clear sense of the life she wanted to build. Their contrasting personalities created some of the film's most memorable moments, while the Mumbai setting became almost another character in their journey. From everyday conversations to quiet emotional moments, Wake Up Sid found magic in the little details of young adulthood.

The film went on to receive widespread critical appreciation for its concept, direction, writing, screenplay, soundtrack and performances, while also becoming a commercial success. Its recognition continued at the 55th Filmfare Awards, where it received nine nominations across major categories and won three awards. Ranbir Kapoor won Best Actor Critics, Ayan Mukerji received the Best Debut Director award, sharing the honour with Zoya Akhtar, and Kavita Seth won Best Female Playback Singer for the much-loved song Iktara. The film's music, particularly Iktara, became an important part of its identity and continues to evoke memories of the film even years later.

Seventeen years on, Wake Up Sid remains a film that audiences can return to at different stages of life and discover something new in. For some, it is a nostalgic reminder of college days, first jobs, friendships and first love, while for others, Sid's uncertain journey towards finding his place in the world feels surprisingly familiar. Dharma Productions' anniversary tribute celebrates exactly that timeless quality, a story about growing up without having all the answers, falling in love while finding yourself, and making memories along the way. Seventeen years later, Sid and Aisha may have moved on, but their Mumbai story continues to wake up a new generation of viewers.
