Madden explores the period after John Madden’s successful coaching career with the Oakland Raiders came to an end. Rather than simply walking away from football, the larger-than-life coach found himself searching for a new way to remain connected to the sport he loved. His unlikely partnership with a Harvard programmer eventually led to the creation of a football video game that would carry his name and transform the way fans interacted with the sport.
The film also dives into the origins of the Madden NFL franchise, which began with the release of John Madden Football in 1988 for MS-DOS and Apple II. The game continued to evolve throughout the 1990s before becoming one of the most recognisable sports video game franchises in the world. Nicolas Cage takes on the challenging role of John Madden, while Christian Bale portrays Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. Kathryn Hahn plays Virginia Madden, Madden’s wife, and John Mulaney stars as EA founder Trip Hawkins. The ensemble also features Sienna Miller, Shane Gillis and Joel Murray as legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall. Together, the cast brings several major figures from Madden’s professional and personal life into the story.
The film is directed by David O. Russell, whose previous credits include The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Joy and Amsterdam.
