Sharon Prabhakar Says She Would Pick Singing Over Acting ‘By a Mile’: ‘I Love Performing on Stage’

Veteran singer and actor Sharon Prabhakar has made it clear that while acting has always come naturally to her, music remains her first love. During a recent media interaction, the performer opened up about her journey across singing, theatre, films and web series, revealing that if she ever had to choose between acting and singing, she would pick singing without a second thought.

Sharon has enjoyed a diverse career that has seen her move comfortably between the stage and screen. Apart from her hit singles and live performances, she has appeared in films including Akarshan, Rock Dancer, Saas Bahu Aur Sensex and Bombairiya. She has also been part of popular web shows such as Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain and Hai Junoon, showcasing another side of her artistic personality.

Speaking about how her journey evolved from theatre to acting and eventually into a successful singing career, Sharon said that the transition happened organically. She explained that she remains open to life and enjoys performing, particularly when she is on stage. However, despite being comfortable in front of the camera, she admitted that acting does not excite her in quite the same way that music does.

Sharon candidly said that she considers herself a good actress, but singing remains where her real passion lies. According to her, she loves the freedom and energy that comes with performing live, even joking that she is perfectly happy “living out of a suitcase” while travelling for performances. For Sharon, the stage appears to offer a kind of immediacy and connection with audiences that continues to draw her back to music.

The singer also spoke about the very different demands of acting. She pointed out that shooting requires patience, preparation and learning lines, and she takes her work seriously enough to arrive on set fully prepared. Sharon described herself as hardworking, diligent and dedicated, particularly when it comes to getting her dialogues right. Yet even with that commitment to acting, she knows exactly where her heart lies.

“If I was to just follow my passion,” Sharon said while discussing the choice between the two professions, she would choose singing. She then made her preference crystal clear, saying, “I would choose singing by a mile.” It is a simple statement, but one that perhaps best sums up the relationship she has had with music throughout her long career.

Sharon also took a nostalgic trip down memory lane while remembering some of her hectic touring days. She recalled travelling for massive shows alongside legendary composer-singer Bappi Lahiri, describing performances where crowds could number in the tens of thousands. She remembered the atmosphere as “manic” and spoke fondly about sharing those stages with several prominent entertainers, including Govinda and other performers.

Those memories offer a glimpse into an era when live musical shows were massive cultural events, bringing together singers, actors and performers before huge audiences. For Sharon, those years were clearly filled with intense schedules but also unforgettable experiences. Her recollections underline just how deeply live performance has been woven into her professional life.

Her connection with fellow celebrated singer Usha Uthup is another relationship Sharon continues to value. The two artists shared a seven-inch vinyl release, Aaj Ki Raat / Chhupke Kaun Aya, in 2019 through Outernational Sounds. Sharon described Usha as a dear friend and revealed that they remain in touch over the phone.

Interestingly, Sharon also suggested that the two singers have spoken about working together again. According to her, Usha often tells her that they should do something together, and Sharon is equally enthusiastic about the idea. “We are just a call away from each other,” she said, reflecting the warmth and ease in their friendship.

From packed live shows and chart-topping music to acting assignments across films and streaming series, Sharon Prabhakar's career has never been confined to a single medium. Yet, after experiencing the worlds of theatre, cinema, television and digital entertainment, her answer remains remarkably straightforward: singing is where she feels most at home. And if another choice between the microphone and the camera comes her way, Sharon already knows which one she will pick.
