New Delhi, Sep 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced Huzair Farhan Baig alias Huzair to six years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 58,000 in connection with a terror conspiracy case linked to the proscribed terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS), the agency said on Monday.
The case, relating to an IS module operating in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, was initially registered by the Karnataka Police on September 19, 2022.
The NIA subsequently took over the investigation and re-registered the case on November 15, 2022.
According to the NIA, the investigation revealed an IS module operating clandestinely in Thirthahalli town of Shivamogga district.
The accused were allegedly mentored and guided by an online handler using the name “Colonel,” later identified as Mohammed Shaheed Faisal, an absconding accused in several NIA terror cases.
The agency alleged that Faisal was radicalising and recruiting youths to propagate IS ideology and further terrorist activities in India.
Investigations revealed that Baig was radicalised and recruited by co-accused Maaz Muneer Ahmed and Syed Yasin. On Ahmed’s instructions, Baig arranged a hideout in Bengaluru for terrorist activities.
The NIA further said Baig received funds in the form of cryptocurrency in accounts belonging to his friends. The cryptocurrency was converted into fiat currency and used to make payments related to the hideout.
Ahmed arranged the funds through the online handler.
The NIA said it has filed four chargesheets against 12 accused persons in the case so far. Three of the accused have already been convicted and sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment along with fines.
The agency added that it continues to trace and identify the whereabouts of Mohammed Shaheed Faisal, the online handler who allegedly planned and conspired to establish the module involved in the case.
