Guwahati, Sep 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against retired Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Deputy Chief Engineer Sajal Kanti Das for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said on Monday.
The CBI’s Guwahati branch has argued that Das and his wife, Sangita Das, accumulated disproportionate assets worth approximately Rs 88.20 lakh between 2016 and 2022.
According to the probe agency’s claim, the couple’s total assets, valued at around Rs 39.85 lakh in 2016, increased to Rs 1,28,66,946 by 2022. The alleged increase in assets forms the basis of the disproportionate assets case. The investigation has identified several properties and financial holdings allegedly linked to the couple in Assam’s Cachar district. Among the properties under scrutiny is a house valued at approximately Rs 19 lakh, reportedly constructed on five kathas of land at Rangpur locality in the Cachar district.
The agency has also claimed that substantial parcels of land in Udharbond and Lakhipur localities were held in the name of Sangita Das.
The CBI has further claimed that Sangita Das owned a commercial property in the Club Road area in Silchar, valued at around Rs 34 lakh. A flat on the same road, worth more than Rs 20 lakh, was allegedly registered in Sajal Kanti Das’s name.
As part of its investigation, the agency also identified multiple bank accounts, fixed deposits and term deposits maintained separately by the retired railway engineer and his wife. The financial holdings reportedly involved amounts running into several lakhs of rupees.
Sajal Kanti Das had served as Deputy Chief Engineer with the Northeast Frontier Railway at Jiribam. The case concerns allegations of possession of assets beyond the couple’s known sources of income during the specified period. The properties, bank deposits and other financial holdings identified by the CBI remain subject to detailed investigation and verification.
The registration of the case marks the beginning of the agency’s formal investigation into the alleged accumulation of disproportionate assets. Further action will depend on the findings of the probe and the verification of the financial records and properties linked to the accused.
