Mirzapur Seems To Bring Its Own Luck, Says Gurmeet Singh

Mirzapur has grown from an ambitious OTT series into a full-fledged pop-culture phenomenon, and filmmaker Gurmeet Singh believes the franchise has had a little luck of its own along the way. Singh, who directed Mirzapur: The Movie, reflected on the show's casting, its journey to the big screen and the responsibility of making a theatrical adaptation that could satisfy longtime fans while also working for audiences discovering the world for the first time.

Looking back at the casting of the first season, Gurmeet recalled a time when OTT was still finding its feet and filmmakers had greater freedom to focus on performers and storytelling rather than star power and numbers. “I think we were very lucky that this show was made right when the OTT era was just beginning. Thankfully, back then, there wasn't the pressure of numbers or metrics; the only demand was for quality—good actors, strong writing, and something innovative. That’s exactly what we did,” he said.

Gurmeet believes the casting of Mirzapur worked because the makers found exceptional actors at a time when many of them were still waiting for their big breakthrough. “We’ve been very fortunate; Mirzapur seems to bring its own luck. While the cast members might not have been hugely popular at the time, they were all exceptional artists who were simply waiting for the right opportunity to shine. Whether it was Mirzapur, another show, or a film, their moment was bound to come—and we were lucky that it happened through Mirzapur,” the filmmaker said. The success of the series eventually turned several of its performers into some of the most recognisable faces associated with the franchise.

With the series having such a passionate following, taking Mirzapur to cinemas came with its own set of expectations. However, Gurmeet explained that the film was never treated as a project that had to be radically altered because of the show's success. “Actually, that situation never really arose. The film was made precisely because the show was loved; we moved in this direction organically,” he said. Instead, the team focused on approaching the theatrical adaptation with the freshness of a new project while retaining the world and characters that audiences already knew and loved.

Gurmeet explained that the biggest challenge was creating a film that could offer something extra to existing fans without making newcomers feel lost. “However, while making it, we kept one thing in mind: we would approach this film as if we were creating it for the very first time. As you might have heard, even those who haven't seen the series are enjoying the film just as much. Our goal was, of course, to offer the fans something more—to give them more entertainment,” he said. The filmmaker added that the familiar characters gave the team the opportunity to introduce “new layers,” more intensity and swagger, or bhaukaal, while also turning up the fun.

For Gurmeet, that balance was essential to making Mirzapur: The Movie work as a theatrical experience. “They are already familiar with the world and the characters, so we wanted to add new layers, bring in more intensity and swagger (bhaukaal), and amp up the fun. Yet, the story also had to be understandable and enjoyable for first-time viewers. I believe it was crucial for the theatrical version—that three-hour film—to stand on its own as a complete experience.” With the franchise making the leap from streaming to cinemas, Gurmeet's approach was ultimately about giving longtime viewers more of the world they love while ensuring the big-screen Mirzapur could speak for itself.
